KBS was established in 2007 on the core competencies inherited from Koc Information Systems to meet the requirements of the defense sector by having agile software/hardware adaptation capability and to provide solutions for the defense industry. Its goal is to be the most respected and reliable leader in the industry. KBS will also provide national solutions with mission critical technology with the application of Koc Information System's sixty years of technological knowledge. With a team of approximately 70 dedicated professionals in its national and NATO certified facilities in METU Technopolis, it satisfies the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 quality management system and SEI SW-CMMI Level 3 software development procedures.

Fundamental Capabilities

In light of the assessments it has made on specializing in the defense industry; KBS will now focus on C4ISR, sea platforms, and underwater acoustic systems, supported by employees are empowered with orthogonal specialization in these areas. The vision of KBS is to provide turnkey solutions, value-added engineering support on electronic systems, and platform integration to the companies in the Koc Group that specialize in the design and manufacturing of platforms.

Command Control Information Systems

Provisional acceptance for the Turkish Armed Forces Information System (TBS) project passed in December, 28th 2007 and has since been in operation in the Turkish General Staff headquarters.

With TBS is a command control information system that governs the ground and air forces, the navy, gendarmerie, the coast guard, and the Ministry of Defense’s various systems, and collects and presents the information retrieved from these contacts to users at headquarters. Personnel, Intelligence, Operations, Logistics, General Plan Principles, Communication Electronics Information Systems, Armed Forces Command Operations Center Commandership software modules are developed.

The MEDAS (Message and Document Distribution System) project, which was signed off with the SSM (Under Secretariat of Defense Industry), was successfully completed 4 ½ months before the contracted date in December 2009. With MEDAS, users are provided with fast, safe, reliable, and continuous message and document communication and remote users are now able to access this information, as well. With the help of MEDAS, an inventory of all software and hardware components is kept, all software patches and updates, monitoring of all services and applications and backup and rollback of all data in the system can be performed.

With the Konvoy Project, started in November 2008, cruise capabilities true to vehicle dynamics, ballistic and real simulations of artillery, intelligent behavior of the targets and humans in the scenario, and realistic animation of the bipeds for seven different vehicles are provided for the Directorate General of Security and Department of Special Operations. Terrestrial establishments like coastal surveillance or naval base protection command & control systems are also planned to be provided with national or introduced joint ventures is our goal. Within the scope of this vision, efforts in collaboration with domestic and international companies are carried on.

Naval Platforms & Underwater Acoustics Systems

Within the scope of our activities that focus on the security of naval platforms, development in acoustics is given great importance. The prior competencies within this field in the Turkish defense industry were found lacking, so in response, we set a goal to find world class solutions. Indigenous Diver Detection Sonar design & development was started at the end of 2007, and TUBITAK found it worthy of support as an R&D project. With this project, novel detection, classification, and localization algorithms will be developed to protect oil platforms, naval bases, commercial ports, underwater cultural assets, VIP boats, and economically important coastal structures against attack by submerged intruders (divers, sub-skimmer vehicles), and the design of wet and dry ends of the system will be done using existing national resources.

Following this project, studies on acoustics will continue by manufacturing the sonar systems for our underwater and terrestrial platforms in compliance with the company’s vision and the concept of using national resources, novel design, and national hardware to the maximum extent possible.

Another subject of interest in acoustics is to develop the “decision-making” mechanisms for underwater mines with local design and engineering. Manufacture of intelligent mines with an embedded system with a detection, classification, and diagnostic mechanism connected to the national defense database, is another goal of this effort.

Studies in conjunction with these issues were started both in domestic and international markets by cooperating with Ultra Electronics, one of the most important players in the global market on torpedo defense systems.

In addition to its acoustics related business, KBS intends to provide services to shipyards including design, acquisition, and integration of combat systems for military ships by coordinating the local industry. Our ultimate goal in this domain is to provide turnkey delivery of military ships together with the other Koç Group companies.
